Hey now,
With summer upon us (yes, I know that summer doesn’t officially begin until next week, but it sure feels like it), children breathe a sigh of relief after another school year and families breathe easy as well as their vacation plans come closer to fruition. Here at the church, while things are somewhat slower there is a great deal that needs to be done in a very short amount of time. For we like all families have ‘honey do’ lists. Some of it includes the normal cleaning, for after a year when children from our faith formation program and school have used the classrooms and other facilities things need to be, let us say, freshened up. There are some projects that need to be quoted and hopefully scheduled before the next school year starts, and in such a way to not impede some of our ministries from continuing throughout the summer months. So let me share with you some of the ideas that are in process and other action items already in the works. Let us start with the PMC (that is the house on the corner of 35th Ave. and Desert Cove and please don’t ask me what PMC stands for), and simply put it needs some tender loving care. We want to take some items out so that we can open up the spaces allowing larger meeting spaces for the groups that meet there. Along with that we will tear out the carpet, refinish the floor, repair some of the exterior trim and add a coat of paint. Once this project is done in the coming year we will not only have some newly configured and larger meeting spaces, but we will have what is called an Atrium. This room will be dedicated for one purpose and that is the teaching of our children through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. This is a Montessori based way of teaching children about the mass, the sacraments and parables with a hands-on approach. While there is a limit, not only of space, but also for one-on-one catechesis, this will be a welcome addition to our Faith Formation program. At the school, we will be looking at adding some shrubbery along the fence by the alley, so as to create a deterrent to those wanting to jump the fence and cause damage (yes this has happened in the past years), but also to have a more pleasant view as the children play at recess. We will need to re-seal the black top at the school as the last anyone can remember it was done over 10 years ago. Besides some other cleaning and aesthetic changes one other noticeable change will be a sign that we hope to have in place over the hall. At our school’s 50th anniversary celebration we honored the Loreto Sisters (the IBVM community that still serves at Ss. Simon and Jude), as they were the first order of religious sisters to start up and serve at our school. Thus, we are dedicating the hall to them and we will have a sign made denoting that for all those who enter. There are the continual infrastructure repairs that will be prioritized at the church and hall as well to ensure that we care for these aging buildings and we will share more about that as we move forward. With all of these ‘housekeeping’ items, so to speak, we will need help. Thus, the word will go out and we have added a coordinator to help us with volunteers, and also in an important way to help us here at the church respect and thank those who volunteer their time to help. As you can read it will be just a relaxed atmosphere around the church and school over the summer, (NOT!), but it is worthwhile as we are doing this not only for us but also for those who will call St. Jerome their parish home for generations to come. In Christ’s Peace,
Fr. Gary
Padre Gary
