“My dear friends,

This past Sunday, June 12, I celebrated my 83rd birthday. I thank all of you who either orally wished me a happy birthday or sent me birthday cards. It is always appreciated. Someone asked me: How does it feel to celebrate your 83rd birthday? Obviously I’m not the only one celebrating his or her 83rd birthday and I’m convinced that each and every one experiences it differently. I want to share with you how I answered this parishioner’s question. First of all I told him how grateful I am to God for the gift of life that I received from Him 83 years ago and for all His blessings that He has showered upon me during all these years and for the blessings that He keeps sharing with me. Secondly I ask myself why? Why am I still alive while I look at all the young men who were with me at the seminary. Most of them have died. They were all very good priests, very involved in the priestly ministry. Obviously I don’t have any answer to that question. I know some of you will say, “God needs you.” I’m glad He does but I know that He also needed all these other priests. The mystery of life and death is, yes, a great mystery. Thirdly, I shared with this parishioner how I’m aware that, while I have enjoyed a long life, I have to prepare myself to return to the Lord whenever He will call me. And, to me, this is very important. You may ask, “How do you prepare yourself?” From the human point of view, I try to let go, little by little, of all that the world offers to me. Belonging to a religious community, I never owned a car, a house. So I never got attached to these material things. But there are all kinds of material things that, unconsciously, we become attached to. We have to learn to let go and let God become our soul possession. From the spiritual point of view, which is much more important, I try to concentrate more than ever before on the quality of my relationship with God. The books I read are all spiritual books. When I pray the Divine Office, I make a point of praying it slowly and as a form of meditation. I cherish my Holy Hour in the chapel every day. Every morning I pray the rosary and I lift up to the Blessed Virgin Mary all the people who have asked me to pray for them. I hope and pray that all of you, whenever you celebrate your birthday, you take the time to thank God for the gift of your life and for all the blessings that the Lord shares with you. Have a good week!

Fr. Ben

Siempre lo he apreciado. Obviamente no tengo ninguna respuesta a esa pregunta.

Padre Ben”
