Below is the letter that Father Gary sent out in the bulletin this past weekend giving a full update on how Father Ben is doing.

Hey now,

I would like to take this time to let everyone know about

While there a number of tests were conducted to ascertain what may be the cause of his nausea, but also the pain that he was having at the base of his neck. After a series of tests the doctors stated it was a bllateral subdural hematoma. To save you time looking this up on WebMD, this is a condition in which some blood vessels leaked some fluid and/or blood into the cavity around the brain. The area of this leak (bruise) was around the area of the brain that notifies the body if we are to feel nauseated. He was kept at the hospital and a neurologist cleared him to go back to his family’s home.

While there he made arrangements to come back to Phoenix after a few days rest and also some good home cooking. His family graciously was taking care of him, but after dialogue with his religious order (Congregation of Jesus and Mary or simply referred to as the Eudists) he decided he would rather cancel his return trip and instead go to his community’s home. He said there are a number of retired priests there and they have an infirmary with a full-time nurse and that made him feel more comfortable than staying with family or coming back to Phoenix at this time.

As I alluded to he is in very good spirits and he wants to follow his doctor’s advice so this hematoma dissipates. At this time we do not know if this will take a few days or a few weeks, but we know prayers and rest are the best things for him at this time. Some people may have his contact information and while we all want to talk to him the best thing that we can do is allow him to rest and be rejuvenated being with his confreres in the community and talking probably without stop in his native tongue.

I have continually assured him of our prayers and masses have been offered for his healing as well. Harvey was nothing compared to our prayers storming heaven for Fr. Ben. As many people have questioned what is happening I hope this answers your questions and gives you a certain peace of mind and heart. If anything changes know that we will get the information to you through updates at mass, here in the bulletin and possibly through social media. However, the old adage still holds true, “no news is good news.” Let us continue to pray for Fr. Ben and for vocations to the priesthood because Fr. Ben was explicit in our conversations about priests to serve not only here at St. Jerome but throughout the world to bring God’s people the good news of salvation.

In Christ’s Peace,
Fr. Gary See more
